Guildford Civic Hall

Built in 1962, the Civic Hall on London Road, known as Guildford Civic, was the venue for many bands and orchestras and has seen legendary performances by The Stranglers and Eric Clapton, among a host of others. Controversially, it was closed in 2004 by the council to save the money spent on running costs and stood empty for over five years. In the autumn of 2009 it was demolished and will be replaced with a new entertainment venue due to open 2011.

The external walls of the hall were left standing while the roof was removed, then knocked down in stages. This shot shows the broken windows at the top.

Demolition

I was lucky enough to be able to watch the demolition team at work. The machinery is taking down the front of the hall; water is sprayed onto the workface to keep the dust down.
